Play Blackjack at SkyCity Auckland
Access and Table Requirements
We run a large casino floor, with around 150 table games in action, including several blackjack variations. On our main floor and in our VIP rooms, you may find Classic Blackjack, Premium Blackjack, $50 Blackjack, Ante Up Blackjack and Blackjack+.
To sit at any blackjack table you must have either a SHOW by SkyCity card or a Premier Rewards card. To register for a card you need valid photo ID that shows your date of birth and where you live. The casino operates 24 hours a day, except Christmas Day, Good Friday, and from 3am to 1pm on Anzac Day.
On the main floor, table minimums usually start from $5-$10. Some layouts are set higher, with a $25 minimum and a maximum bet of $1000. Our VIP rooms work on tailored betting limits for eligible members; final limits are always subject to management approval and can be changed when needed.
Game Rules and Deck Setup
According to the New Zealand rules, blackjack is one of the consolidated casino table games authorised in the country. Most of our blackjack games on the main floor use a six-deck shoe. Dealers stand on soft 17, and a natural blackjack pays 3 to 2 on your stake. You may double down on hard totals only and you are allowed to double after a split. Re-splitting is available up to a maximum of three hands, but aces are excluded from re-splitting.
We operate with a no-hole-card procedure. The dealer does not draw or check a second card until all players have finished acting on their hands. If the dealer then turns over a blackjack, the OBBO rule applies: the player loses the original wager plus any additional wagers already committed through splitting or doubling.
Surrender is not offered at any of our blackjack tables. Card values follow standard blackjack rules: numbered cards count as their printed value, all face cards count as 10, and aces can be either 1 or 11, depending on what benefits your hand total.
| Rule Element | Specification |

How Gameplay Works
Before each round you place your bet using casino chips inside the marked betting circle. The dealer then gives you two face-up cards, while the dealer’s first card is face up as well. Play moves clockwise, with each seat making decisions in turn before the dealer resolves the next position.
At our blackjack tables you can usually:
- Hit - ask for one more card to try to improve your total.
- Stand - keep your current hand and end your turn.
- Double Down - double your initial wager and receive exactly one extra card.
- Split - if you have a pair, separate it into two hands and match your original bet on the new hand.
When you split, each new hand receives one additional card and you continue playing them in turn under normal rules. A split of aces is handled differently: each ace receives one card only, and you do not draw further cards on those hands. If you receive another ace after a split, you cannot re-split it.
A natural blackjack is when your first two cards total 21. This hand pays 1.5 times your wager immediately, unless the dealer also has blackjack. In that situation the hand is a push and your stake is returned with no win or loss.
Dealers must take cards on any total of 16 or less and must stand on all 17s, including soft 17. When all players have finished deciding, the dealer completes their hand, compares each total and settles the wagers. Regular winning hands pay 1 to 1; only a natural blackjack receives the 3 to 2 payout.

Shuffle Machines and Penetration
On the main floor we usually use continuous shuffle machines. These units feed the used cards back into the shoe after each round, which removes long shuffle breaks and keeps a fairly steady game speed. Because the composition of the shoe is constantly refreshed, card counting is effectively disrupted and predictable card depletion does not occur.
A published house edge estimate for New Zealand blackjack with correct basic strategy is around 0.53%. Under our six-deck rules with the OBBO structure, the house maintains a slight mathematical advantage over players who follow optimal play.
Basic Strategy Adjustments
To play close to optimal, your decisions need to respond both to the dealer’s upcard and to whether your hand is hard or soft. Hard totals from 12 to 16 are generally hit when the dealer shows 7 or higher, and stood when the dealer shows 2 through 6. Any hard 17 or more is always a stand in our games.
Soft totals behave differently. A soft 18 normally stands against dealer 2-8, but you should hit it against a 9, 10 or ace. Soft 17 and below are treated as hit hands, while soft 19 and 20 are always stands under basic strategy.
Doubling guidelines are also specific. Hard 9 is doubled against dealer 3-6, hard 10 against 2-9, and hard 11 against 2-10. For soft hands, doubling includes soft 13-14 versus dealer 5-6, soft 15-16 against 4-6, and soft 17-18 against dealer 3-6.
Pair decisions remain straightforward. Always split aces and 8s. Do not split 5s or 10s at our tables. Split 2s, 3s and 6s and 7s against dealer cards 2-7. Split 4s only when the dealer shows 5 or 6, and split 9s against 2-9 except when the dealer’s upcard is 7.
Table Selection and Session Management
Picking a table at SkyCity Auckland should start with your bankroll and the pace you are comfortable with. Lower-limit seats at $5-$10 minimums are better suited to casual play and testing out strategy. Our $25 minimum tables tend to draw more experienced players who want more at stake.
Crowded tables slow the action, reducing the number of rounds you see each hour. That usually lowers both potential winning and losing swings. Short-handed or heads-up games move much faster; volatility goes up, so it typically needs a stronger bankroll to ride those short-term moves.
For bankroll planning, a careful approach is to bring roughly 50-100 times the table minimum for a blackjack session. At a $10 minimum table, that points to $500-$1000 in available funds. Many players also set personal limits, for example a loss limit at about half of the session bankroll and a win target at 50% profit. Hitting either point is a good signal to close the session and avoid decisions made under pressure.
Because of OBBO, it is particularly important to be selective with splits and doubles in marginal spots, particularly against dealer aces or 10-value cards. In these cases you are risking both the base bet and the added wager when the dealer later reveals a blackjack.
Time at the table matters as much as the amount wagered. Long, uninterrupted sessions increase the total action and the overall effect of the house edge. Taking breaks, splitting your play into shorter blocks and coming back with a clear head usually supports better decision making at our blackjack tables.
